Our Top Revision Tips

The sun is out, the birds are singing, exam season is looming and revision has begun. Well, revision *should* have begun. But don’t panic; to make the most of your time among the books, here are some tips to make sure you’re revising smart as well as hard.

Don’t Cram

Your brain is an amazing machine, but it’s not a miracle worker. You can only get it to do so much in one go, and the faster you try to cover a wide topic, the more you’re going to miss. Seriously – plan ahead. Pick a focused area of study per day, and do it properly. Your poor aching synapses will love you for it.

Put Pen to Paper

Take notes, constantly. You don’t necessarily have to read them later, but putting a key factor to paper is an easy way to make sure that the important stuff is drummed into your head. If you’re just going to read a book, the vital stuff will be awash in a sea of less vital words – think of note-taking as decluttering your memory.

Listen to the Right Music

Music is important, as there’s not a lot that’s makes you more aware of time passing really slowly than complete silence. But there are rules. Audible lyrics are a huge no no, for one, and heavy beats, jarring time signatures and anything that actively bores you are definitely out.

Our tips? We always find that things like ambient techno, post-rock, film soundtracks and classical work best – anything that’s wordless and propulsive without being intrusive. Start a playlist and tailor it to your needs – and keep the volume down.

Eat Well

Here’s the thing: when people say “superfoods are good,” they aren’t lying to you. So, eat blueberries by the troughload. Substitute coffee for bananas, because they do exactly the same thing without making you feel like you’ve woken up mid-nap an hour later. Don’t eat quinoa, because we’ve not pushed the price up so much that locals who desperately need it to survive can’t afford it, but get that brown rice down you.

But, much more importantly – do eat, and eat something you actually enjoy. You’re not going to remember anything if you’re busy thinking about what-feels-like a vast, yawning chasm in your stomach where something delicious is supposed to live.

Get Some Sleep

There’s no point filling your head with information if you’re too strung out to remember the way to the library. In fact, a good night’s sleep can do your brain so much good, you’ll probably end up remembering some stuff you never got around to revising.
